PAPER WORKS

untitled (#2)

untitled (#5)

Two samples from a recent suite of ink drawings on paper, both 8.5 x 11 in.

These drawigs were made possible by the discovery of modestly priced brush pens in a Little Tokyo bookstore. I have a fetish for all things Japanese from pens to girls. Knowing what the pens were designed for I couldn't help but think of calligraphy while drawing. But they are also the result of wanting to return to a faster, less restricted method of making work. To describe them with a simple metaphor, they are --------- (censored by the author, after some feedback I decided I got a little bit too Buckowski there).

Scriptographer is an amazing plug-in for Adobe Illustrator created by Jürg & Urs Lehni. It allows those with knowledge of java script to create thier own illustrator tools and rasters, modify exsisting tools, and share custom ones. Basically you can manipulate your computer's tools in ways you couldn't even do with analog tools. These are the same guys who developed the Hektor. They are also extremely good designers, and type designers.

Processing is an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.

Created by Casey Reas & Ben Fry, this open source code has been used in a long list of impressive works.

RAINY DAYS IN NEW BABYLON

Last fall I printed some t-shirts as a design experiment, under the pseudonym Atelier Herschel D. The entire edition was made up of a dozen different shirts, each hand-screened by myself, and limited to about 5 pieces per design. The inspiration for the edition was based on a kind of semiotic study of my favorite artists and writers at the time.
I'm currently working on a new edition for the coming winter season, subjects include video games, 1980's excess, and modern cartography.
The shirt in the above photo (
Rainy Days Over New Babylon, 2007, edition 1:5) is from the previous set, it's based on a sketch from a friend's prison journal, and uses the image of a Constant Nieuwenhuis' Model for New Babylon (1965?). Constant was a member of the Situationist International, and created architecture that emphasized the importance of leisure, and free time in everyday life. Looking at their work I realized that there are some situations when one can have too much free time, like being incarcerated.

RAVERS SUCK.

untitled (for the love remix)
animated gif
300x450 pixels

Inspired by the Situationist Detourned comics, home-made zines, collage, etc. I began making alot of anti-fantastic, non-monumental works, the exact opposite of a Koons, Hirst, or DaVinci. The pieces are quickly made (no more than a few hours), from anything in my pre-existing repetoire. WIth no commodity value, and really no material vaule. I percieve alot of potential in these works.

BONUS SOUNDTRACK:

This is the kind of music that in a club, would cause me terrible anxiety. It's that rare kind of song that makes you want to dance so bad, you can't. Your brain is completely overwhelmed, signaling your body to perform every step you've ever know simultaneously, resulting in weeping convulsions of joy. Vocal re-edit of Crookers
Il Buono, It's equal parts "bling", "hipster" and "rave cave", which is pretty much where I'm at right now, musically.

1. Stay fly, mutherfucker [Il Buono - FunkyGoldTeeth vocal re-edit]

A place in the sun

In this the inaugural post of Sunshine & Noir, for you lucky few, whom will actually see and read this, I present a collection of summer songs for your listening pleasure. Accompanied by a brief description of the context in which one could receive the most enjoyment potentially possible from each tune.

1. The Car: Heartsabiatch [Nas & Jose Gonzalez vs. Funky Gold Teeth]

Created with the sensitive thug in mind, this sonic amalgamation is equal parts Queensbridge and Vintage Cardigan. Perfect for counting money on the freeway, or feeling heartbroken while weaving through traffic on a fixie.

2. Poolside: Holy Spank Ghost [Holy Ghost & Spank Rock vs. Funky Gold Teeth]

To properly get down to this jam, one should be sipping a fine belgian ale, puffing an overpriced european cigarette. Haunches covered in a Marc Jacobs mankini, flanked by two beauties from Belarus who don't speak a lick of English and model at YSL trunk shows. You should never have more than two wet dollars in your shorts.

3. The Dancefloor: Gossip From School Pt. 3 [Frankie Smith & Hot Chip & Ludacris vs. Funky Gold Teeth]

I made this one for the brothers in the party
to find a hottie and dance body to body...

4. The Boudoir: Touch Me Baby by Myrna Hauge

The accouterments of romance.
