RAINY DAYS IN NEW BABYLON

Last fall I printed some t-shirts as a design experiment, under the pseudonym Atelier Herschel D. The entire edition was made up of a dozen different shirts, each hand-screened by myself, and limited to about 5 pieces per design. The inspiration for the edition was based on a kind of semiotic study of my favorite artists and writers at the time.
I'm currently working on a new edition for the coming winter season, subjects include video games, 1980's excess, and modern cartography.
The shirt in the above photo (
Rainy Days Over New Babylon, 2007, edition 1:5) is from the previous set, it's based on a sketch from a friend's prison journal, and uses the image of a Constant Nieuwenhuis' Model for New Babylon (1965?). Constant was a member of the Situationist International, and created architecture that emphasized the importance of leisure, and free time in everyday life. Looking at their work I realized that there are some situations when one can have too much free time, like being incarcerated.
